Frequently Asked Questions
This is a list of common questions that I am generally asked by email. If your question has been answered many times before then expect it to show up here. Although I won't chew you out if you ask me any of the questions listed here.
Why the move from cavestory.org to cavestory.one?
I saw many laws that would harm the open internet that have been proposed in the US over the years. It isn't just the US, mind you, countries like the UK and Australia are introducing age bans. Most countries that block websites (like Russia or North Koria) will just block a website at the ISP level, but the US is unique in the sense that the vast majority of general TLD ("top-level domain", as in the part of the domain after the last dot such as .com, .org, or in this case... .one) registries are based in the US, so they are in the position of being able to simply pass a law that allows them to force a US-based registry to deregister a domain entirely. With the current state of the US, I am not taking any risks. There is no reason not to believe that some future dystopian protect-the-kids censorship law won't take down the whole cavestory.org domain at the registry level just to remove the forums because of something someone posted, or because we aren't asking people for age verification just to register.
I wanted a tld that wasn't a ccTLD (country-code TLD), since those get poor search results outside of the country in question, but also is controlled by a registry based in a country with a high internet freedom rating. I've been meaning to make this move for years, but finding a new TLD that met all on my requirements was hard. Eventually I found .one, a TLD with a registry based in Denmark. Not only that, but I have moved to a domain registrar based in Finland, and a hosting provider based in Finland with physical servers based in Denmark. Both Finland and Denmark are two of the highest-rated countries in terms of internet freedom.
The cavestory.org domain still exists, and redirects to the cavestory.one, but I do mourn the loss of cavestory.org as the site's primary domain. After all I originally chose the .org tld because it was the music format in Cave Story.
Though cavestory.one is a pretty safe bet as a domain because Pixel will never make a Cave Story 2.
How do you convert .org files to .mp3?
Org Maker 3 has an export to .wav feature. From there you can use whatever .wav to .mp3 converter tool you prefer. Same for .ogg and .flac. Though if converting to .flac you need to either specify a bit depth of 24 when converting from .wav to .flac, or if that isn't possible then convert the .wav files to 24-bit before converting to .flac.
I'm translating the game to my language, would you put it on the site?
Of course. Email me a link when you are finished.
Can I Let's Play Cave Story?
Okay you got me, people don't actually ask me this, but Nicalis (who holds commercial rights to the game) saw this as being important enough to address on their website , and the answer is yes. This also allows ad revenue from said videos.
Do you have any advertising space available on this site? What about pre-written articles and/or link exchanges?
All content (links, text or images) on this site must be to do with either Cave Story, Daisuke Amaya (Pixel), or things that he has had involvement in creating. I refuse to sell out in any way. The banners on the homepage are just something that I made and put up for free because I want to support Pixel.
Would you like us to improve your SEO?
No. The site has sat within the top 3 search results for "Cave Story", "Doukutsu", and "Doukutsu Monogatari" for over a decade and an half. I get a stupid number of emails from SEO companies and the answer to all of them has been "no".
